Howard Wayne "Red" Hickey (February 14, 1917 – March 30, 2006) was an American professional football player and coach. He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1941 and the Cleveland / Los Angeles Rams from 1945 to 1948. Hickey served as head coach for the NFL's San Francisco 49ers from 1959 to 1963. With Hickey as their head coach, the 1960 49ers became the first NFL team to adopt the shotgun formation as its primary mode of offense. Until then, the alignment had been used only sparingly around the league.
